Now firmly established as one of the most important days in the graduate developer’s diary, the AGR Graduate Development Conference for 2011 is taking place on Friday 25 March at the usual venue –INMARSAT, Old Street, London, with the theme of: GRADUATE DEVELOPMENT IN AN AGE OF AUSTERITY

ONE DAY GRADUATE DEVELOPMENT CONFERENCE


The detailed programme will be published at the end of the month, however we are delighted to annount that Jim Burrell, Senior VP of Enterprise Rent-A-Car Europe will be giving our keynote address. The conference will also contain keynote presentations, interactive workshops and the announcement of this year’s winners of the AGR Graduate Development awards. In addition we are asking the panel of judges to feed back on the process and provide an analysis of trends, best practice etc in the sector. The day will end with a celebratory drinks reception to acknowledge the awards winners. The interactive workshops will look at issues as diverse as:


• the graduate experience (from their perspective)
• how to leverage internal resources to deliver your development programme
• metrics for success
• continuous development (before and after the graduate programme

LAUNCH OF THE AGR GRADUATE DEVELOPMENT AWARDS- 2011


AGR Award for Strategic Alignment — Award 1


This award recognises excellence in engagement with all stakeholders of the graduate development programme. It is given for demonstrating commitment to and understanding of your internal stakeholders. Examples of good practice are likely to show effective two-way liaison with stakeholders, which is reviewed and monitored on a regular basis. This may include line manager briefing sessions, graduate newsletters, focus groups, feedback forms etc.

Entries will be measured against the following criteria:


a) Clear understanding of who the relevant stakeholders are in your organisation and what their needs are
b) 3 case study examples of how you have engaged effectively with stakeholders
c) Demonstrable evidence of how stakeholder engagement is monitored and reviewed


AGR Award for Career Managment — Award 2


This award recognises excellence in succession planning beyond your two or three year graduate programme. Examples of good practice may include transition workshops at the end of the graduate programme, career development planning initiatives, leadership development programmes, training and development frameworks as well high potential assessment centres.

Entries will be measured against the following criteria:


a) Demonstrable evidence of how the graduate programme is integrated with wider talent management initiatives
b) Evidence of how you measure the effectiveness and progression of your graduates beyond the graduate programme
c) Extent and creativity of programmes to assist the transition off the graduate programme
d) Demonstrable evidence of how retention is measured in your organisation beyond the graduate programme.
e) An endorsement of support from your L & D manger or HR director supporting your evidence.


AGR Award for Supplier Contribution to the Business — Award 3


This award recognises your ability to assist the employer to develop, engaging solutions which aid in the development of graduates within business. These solutions should have clear line of sight to business priorities, and should show evidence of how you have worked with the employer on the design, delivery and evaluation phase of the solution.



Entries should include evidence of the following.

• Should demonstrate a high level of understanding of the issues which the employer wants to address.
• Should contain testimonials from the employer stating the value which you have added to help the development of their graduates.
• Should show development of solutions was generated, and how this was designed to be applicable for the employer.


AGR Award for Graduate Development Preparation in Higher Education — Award 4


This award recognises the contribution of university careers services in the development of students in their preparation for the world of work. It is given for demonstrating outstanding commitment and innovation on the part of careers services in this area and is open to all careers service members of AGR. Examples of innovative good practice could include achievement awards, embedded curricular activities and imaginative use of industry contacts and alumni.


Entries will be measured against the following criteria:


  • Aims and objectives: are these clearly defined and with a clear relevance to the working environment?

Accessibility: who will benefit from the intervention and how is participation promoted and determined?
Impact: what methods are used to assess the development outcomes for student participants and the overall quality and sustainability of the initiative?
Creativity and imagination: have new and different approaches or methods been used to create a development opportunity for students?
Institutional/employer engagement: is the initiative recognised/supported by the institution and potential recruiters?



AGR Award for Graduate Induction — Award 5


This award recognises excellence in the induction of graduates into organisations; it will also demonstrate effective mentoring or coaching initiatives that ensure that the induction of graduates is beyond any initial induction programmes. It is given for demonstrating good practice and imagination in the design and delivery of the induction programme and is open to all members of AGR. Examples of innovative good practice could include residential programmes, engagement with senior management, collective group activities and use of IT and web based communication. Examples and graduates testimonials should be used to re-enforce your application, and should include evidence of the following:-


Entries will be measured against the following criteria:

• Provide a clear purpose of the role of induction within your business.
• Shows others value and support of your mentoring and/or coaching programme and this support comes from many levels of your business, and from within your graduate pool.
• Shows evidence of how you have developed innovative practices to aid smooth transition from university to the workplace and how your graduate alumni take an active part in helping with this.
• Shows clearly how your graduates take responsibility for driving their own placements and development thus aiding retention during the early years whist on the scheme.
